Dr. Erin Hjelmeland Named New Jordan Public Schools Director of Teaching and Learning

Jordan Public Schools (JPS) is pleased to announce Dr. Erin Hjelmeland as the new Director of Teaching and Learning.

Erin Hjelmeland has been a high school English teacher at Jordan High School since 2002. In the fall of 2017, she helped establish the Jordan Summit Academy and began teaching education courses offered through concurrent enrollment with Normandale. Hjelmeland has extensive experience with the development of curriculum, best practices in instruction, and developing programming in education.

Erin was born and raised in Jordan, Minnesota where she was a three sport athlete in Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball as well as being a member of numerous clubs and organization. She went on to play softball and receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Arts and Literature Education 5-12 at Saint Mary’s University in Winona.  Erin has also earned numerous graduate degrees including a Doctorate of Educational Leadership, Educational Specialist Degree in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction, and a Masters of Arts in Education. This extensive education background coinciding with her teaching and leadership experience has given her a strong foundation to build upon in this new role.

Erin is excited to continue working in the district that she loves and to bring her knowledge and ideas to this new position of Director of Teaching and Learning. As a leader in the community, she hopes to inspire and engage all people of Jordan.

Outside of school, Erin spends time with her family. She and Todd have two children -- Scarlett age three and Julian age two. Together they like to be active and travel. Erin is very excited to build on her background in Jordan and continue “Loving Maroon and Living Gold.”

Superintendent Matt Helgerson remarked with excitement, “I’m very pleased to have Erin on board as our new director. Her hard work to guide the development of our successful Summit Academy is a clear predictor for what we feel will be a highly successful tenure as Director of Teaching and Learning. Erin has been a very successful teacher and is known among our students as a “kid magnet.” Students appreciate her style, hard work, and dedication to engaging kids in her classroom. I know that these qualities will transfer over to her work as director. We are excited to work with her to continue our forward progress as a district.”
